Advent

“The first light of Advent is the light of stones,
stones that live in crystals, seashells and bones.”

Today is the first day of Advent and a lot of work has gone into preparing the house and the mood for the next four weeks leading up to Christmas. We have changed our nature table, we have prepared a wreath with four candles for our dining table and we have prepared a bare wreath to add things to as the days go towards Christmas.

We decided that we are going to repeat the same ritual we did last year with Marta and Liliana, and that is what the branch on the nature table is for. Every evening of the Advent we will light one candle, add a star to the branch, sing a carol and say a verse. By Christmas Eve there will be 24 stars hanging from the branch and on the 25th a special star will come out. You can see how it looked like last year here.  This year in addition to the cosmic event represented  by the stars we are also portraying the earthly journey by adding  puppets of Joseph, Mary and the donkey and they will make their way from somewhere in the house (yet to be decided) to the nature table and will arrive there on Christmas Eve. On Christmas day baby Jesus will arrive too.

For us the Advent is a time of finding our inner light, the light of newborn hope  as the darkest time of the year approaches with the Winter solstice (in the North hemisphere). Just as in the jewish festival of Hannukah the light of liberation shines ever brighter on each successive night so too does the Advent wreath grow in brightness as we prepare for another miracle, the light of the God within.

 

 

Hoje é o primeiro dia do Advento e trabalhamos bastante para deixar a casa  noponto certo para as próxias quatro semanas que culminarão com o Natal. A gente trocou a mesa da natureza, preparamos uma coroa com quatro velas para o centro da mesa de jantar e também fizemos a base de uma guirlanda na qual adicionaremos enfeites com o passar dos dias.

Esse ano nós decidimos repetir o ritual que fizemos com a Marta e a Liliana no ano passado, e é para isso que vai servir o galho que está na mesa da natureza. Toda noite durante o período do Advento nós vamos acender uma vela, colocar uma estrelinha no galho, ler um verso e cantar uma música de Natal. Na véspera de Natal teremos 24 estrelinhas no galho, e no dia 25 penduraremos uma estrela especial. Você pode ver aqui como ficou nosso galho no ano passado. Nesse ano, além da jornada cósmica representada pelas estrelas nós também vamos retratar a jornada terrena  usando três bonecos representando José, Maria e o burrinho que sairão de algum lugar na casa (ainda não decidido) e irão até a mesa da natureza onde chegarão no dia 24 de Dezembro. No dia 25 chegará também o menino Jesus.

Para nós o período do Advento é o tempo de procurar pela nossa luz interior, luz de esperança renovada, enquanto a época mais escura do ano se aproxima (no hemisfério norte) com o solstício de inverno.  Assim como no festival judáico do Hannukah a luz da libração brilha com maior intensidade a cada noite, também a coroa do Advento brilha cada vez mais forte enquanto nos preparamos para outro milagre, a luz do nosso Deus interior.
