Sun hats

I’ve been meaning to share the pictures of the sun hats I made for the girls for ages. So, before the Summer retreats to the south hemisphere, here they are.

I used the Oliver + S reversible bucket hat free pattern. I find the usual bucket hat brim too short and that it doesn’t really protect much from the sun, especially the back of the neck.  So I enlarged the brims by 1″ for the small one and 1  1/4 ” for the big one. I actually love the vintage look that the larger brims brought to the hats.

I also experimented with the making method. The instructions on the pattern suggest you make one side of the hat (say, the inside) first, then attach the brim for the outside to it, place the outside cap and finish it by hand sewing the outside cap to the outside brim. I also used the method I learned when making last year’s sun hats where you make each side of the hat separately, then place them right sides together, sew along the outer edge of the brim leaving a gap to turn the hat inside out and hand sew the little gap. For me, the second method worked better. Not only you have less to sew by hand but it turned out to be more precise when edgestitching the seam where the side panels and the brim meet.

Tem um tempão que eu estou querendo mostrar os chapéus que eu fiz para as meninas, então antes que o verão migre para o hemisfério sul de vez, aqui estão.

Eu usei o molde grátis Oliver + S reversible bucket hat. A aba desse formato de chapéu é geralmente curta, e a meu ver não protege muito bem do sol principalmente na nuca, então eu aumentei a aba em 1 polegada no chapéu menor em 1  1/4 polegadas para o maior.

Eu também experimentei dois métodos de confecção. A instrução que vem com o molde sugere que você faça um dos lados do chapéu (digamos, o lado de fora) primeiro, adicione a aba do lado de fora e por último  adicione parte da cabeça a mão. Eu também usei o método que aprendi quando fiz os chapéus do ano passado, onde você monta a parte de fora e de dentro separadamente, e costura as abas do lado do avesso deixando uma pequena abertura para devirar o chapéu. Náo só é menos área para costurar a mão mas também ficou masi bem acabado.

As meninas adoram os chapéus.
